Widget languages
The widget speaks English and Danish out of the box — every built-in text (buttons, placeholders, error messages) exists in both. On the Languages tab of your client you decide which language visitors get, whether they can switch, and how any individual text is worded.
Default language and the selector
- Open your client and go to the Languages tab.
- Under Default language, choose English or Dansk — this is what every visitor sees first.
- Tick Show language selector in the widget if visitors should be able to switch themselves. A small EN/DA switch appears in the chat header, and each visitor's choice is remembered in their browser.
- Leave it off and visitors always see the default language.
- Press Save localization.
Your website can also switch the language in code — CompentChat("language", "da") — for example to follow the language of the page. See Widget installation.
Overriding individual texts
Below the language settings you'll find two columns — English and Dansk — each listing every text the widget shows:
| Field | Where it appears |
|---|---|
| Panel title | Chat window heading. |
| Launcher label | The floating open-chat button. |
| Welcome message | First bot bubble. |
| Input placeholder | Grey text in the message box ("Type a message…"). |
| Send button | The send button label. |
| Close button (screen readers) | Accessible label of the ✕ button. |
| Rate-limit message | Shown during a short cooldown — {seconds} is replaced with the wait time. |
| Error message | Shown when an answer fails. |
| Sources label | The label in front of source chips under answers. |
| Limit reached message | Shown when the visitor/IP/day cap is hit. |
| Conversation full message | Shown when one conversation hits its message cap. |
| New chat button | The button offered to start a fresh conversation. |
How the fields behave:
- Empty field = default. The placeholder text inside each empty field shows exactly what the widget will use — the built-in translation, or (for title/launcher/welcome) the texts from Widget appearance.
- Type into a field to override that one text for that one language. You never need to fill in everything.
- Overrides support
{{name}}-style tokens filled by your site viaCompentChat("identify", …)— e.g. a welcome message ofHi {{name}}, how can we help?greets logged-in customers by name.
Recommended workflow
- Set your title, launcher and welcome on Settings → Widget appearance — these act as the base texts.
- On the Languages tab, override those three in the other language so both languages read naturally.
- Skim the remaining fields — the built-in wording is fine for most sites, but the Rate-limit, Limit reached and Conversation full messages are worth adjusting to your tone of voice, since visitors see them at frustrating moments (see Limits & quotas for when each appears).
- Press Save localization and check both languages in the Playground.
Note on the bot's answers
This tab controls the widget's interface texts. The language the bot answers in is driven by the AI model — it generally replies in the language the visitor writes in. If you want to force answer behavior (e.g. "always answer in Danish"), say so in the system prompt under Settings → AI provider — see AI providers.
